BEAUTIFUL VERY RARE ANTIQUE MAPPIN & WEBB’S. S ARCADIAN’ FAUX TORTOISESHELL & SOLID STERLING SILVER BOX HM 1928 – GOOD CONDITION – GREAT GIFT! On offer is this beautiful, very rare antique Mappin & Webb solid sterling silver box, with gilded interior and mirror to the lid. What makes it really special is the silver motif to the faux tortoiseshell lid. This is the flag of the crown with’S. S ARCADIAN’ on a banner beneath – please see the photos. In précis, from Wikipedia. S Arcadian was a passenger liner built at the Vickers shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness in 1899, originally named the S. Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast. In April 1917, she was hit by a single torpedo from a U boat and sank within 6 minutes. Mappin & Webb; London 1928. It is about 5cm in diameter; 1.7cm in height; and weighs 33.4g. As noted, in good condition, especially considering it is nearly 100 years old, the usual slight signs of wear commensurate with age and use. There are a few very small surface losses to the faux shell on the lid, just above the crown motif on the flag. The gilt interior is in lovely condition, the mirror to the lid gives a reflection but is fogged, with some little dark spots here and there – please see the photos.
