This small village rug is approx 100 years old and though it shows obvious signs of wear, including bitten edges, it is silky smooth and supple with absolutely stunning and intense colours. Main field: burnt terracotta red with luxurious iridescent teal blue medallions and cream highlights. It is coarsely knotted (think large pixels) with primitive geometrically designed small animals, birds and flowers and the double medallion characteristic of many Qashqai village rugs. From the South West of Iran near Shiraz, this is a coarse pure wool rug that has worn over the years to a silky iridescent sheen. It has a beautiful, if a little gnarly, undyed natural wool fringe that ranges from cream to chocolate brown. This carpets beauty lies in its deeply saturated antique colours made from natural vegetable dyes and reminiscent of red earth and midnight blue skies. This rug has been much loved; it has mostly medium to low pile, quite a few repairs and damaged edges as you can see in the photographs and patches of wear.
