Rare Antique Schoenhut 14 Wooden Doll Model 311 Beautiful Condition 1912
This lovely antique doll is made entirely of wood and hand painted in enamel oil. She is in beautiful antique condition. She has not been repaired or repainted. The doll is fully jointed with steel spring hinges and swivel connections. All joints function perfectly with a wonderful range of motion, easily holding any pose. She is able to stand on her own without a doll stand. She has functioning joints at her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. There is a groove cut into the thighs, just above the knee, where the doll’s stockings were tied to the leg with a silk ribbon. The original stockings and ribbon are missing for this doll. The arms of the doll show the most wear, as there are multiple areas of chipped paint. Her blue intaglio eyes have a natural depth caused by the fall of light on its incised iris and pupil. The white “reflection dot” at the top of the iris is raised, as are the eyelids. She has lightly painted, slightly feathered eyebrows. Her full lips are still rosy pink and perfectly painted with a red line between her lips. She has a slight dimple or flattened spot on her right cheek. She has a small chip in the paint on her nose and some minor crazing on her face that can be seen with a magnifying glass. Her hair is the original mohair wig in a short bob style, with a left side part and no bangs. The original bow, which held a portion of the hair back on the right side, is missing. The hair is in excellent condition. In June 1912 girl dolls were first shown in a union suit with stockings and shoes. This doll is wearing her original union suit and original shoes. The stockings are not original to the doll. The knit union suit has yellowed with age but is free of rips or tears. The buttons on the back are intact. Her shoes have leather soles and black leather uppers with a tie. There are numerous scuffs on the shoes. The soles have two holes with grommets that match the holes in the doll’s feet to enable the doll to attach to the stand that originally came with the doll. The impressed mark was the earliest one used by Schoenhut, and can be found on the doll’s back. It says Schoenhut Doll //. Jan 17’11 U. // & Foreign Countries. The Schoenhut decal was not used until 1916. The doll is approximately 14-1/2 high. This is a beautiful example of an early character doll from Schoenhut’s Classic Period.
