Rare and Beautiful Oak Metamorphic Monks Bench and Table c. A beautiful late 17th/early 18th century oak monk’s bench with box seat storage with leaf carved terminals to the arms and feet. The cleated four plank table top with iron riveted original oak brackets beneath which allow the top to swivel up and back to form the back rest for the bench. The bench seat itself with hand forged iron hinges which allow the top to lift and close smoothly and opening to reveal two oak lined compartments. The whole tenoned and peg jointed throughout and arms and box seat set on most attractive finely ring turned twin columns all resting on carved sleigh feet. Heavy, solid and robust, in superior original condition with a lovely rich warm colour. Condition: some bruises, small depletions and marks consistent with age and careful use, possible replaced sleigh feet, scarfed in oak repair to front of box seat as shown in our photographs. The two large oak dowels on which the table top swivels are modern – no doubt there have been several sets of these over the centuries. The rear section of the left hand iron hinge is an early 19th century hand forged iron replacement. Minor evidence of worm – a very small number of old holes here and there but not significant or affecting structure and all long since dead. A rarely seen double width monk’s bench and a very practical piece of early oak furniture which can be used as a dining table seating 6-8 people or a good solid bench with box seat storage. All with a deep natural patina. Dimensions in table form are: 70 inches wide, 32.5 inches deep and 30.75 inches high Dimensions in bench form are: 70 inches wide, 50 inches wide between arms, 46.5 inches high max, 30 inches high from floor to top of arms and 17.5 inches high from floor to top of seat.
