THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE ITEM. The carved cinnabar lacquer panel is very unique in both the color and carving. The color of the cinnabar lacquer is ochre, sometimes referred to as yellow cinnabar, but in this case, the cinnabar lacquer has the yellow brown color of wood or bamboo. The fine layering of the lacquer is most apparent in the lower right corner of the panel where varying colored rings can be seen on the carved rock work. This type of fine layering is typical of late Ming / early Qing carved cinnabar. The overall depiction of open sky, tranquil sea, and powerful mountains (reminiscent of scholar’s rock) is consistent with literati style paintings, jade, and bamboo brushpots.
