Matadi, port city, extreme Democratic Republic of congo. It is located along the Congo River, opposite the city of Vivi. Matadi is located 150 km upstream of the Atlantic port of Banana and is the farthest point of the river reached by ocean going vessels; cataracts prevent further navigation upstream. It is the nation’s main port, with one of central Africa’s largest ports and a 1.5 km coastline that is cut into granite. Located at the base of the Crystal Mountains, the city is named after the word Kikongo for stone. In 1879, the British-American explorer Henry (later Sir Henry) Morton Stanley opened there a trading station. Between 1890 and 1908, congo’s first railway was built from Matadi, passing through the region of the falls to Léopoldville (present-day Kinshasa), the national capital (338 km to the northeast). Inga Falls, 40 km upstream, were developed for hydroelectric power. This medal was made in 1959 by Famous Belgian. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the bank of the Belgian congo. Has 7 cm diameter; 5 mm thickness, and weighs 161. International buyers are welcome. This item is in the category “Coins & Paper Money\Exonumia\Medals”. This Spaniel bank is a popular form and is highly collectable among yellow ware and bank collectors. Saint Charles Spaniel dog banks were popular throughout England and America during the 1800s and were made in a variety of sizes and glazes. This bank is beautiful, molded using yellow ware clay and lightly glazed with the color of the yellow ware clay showing through. These banks were typically covered with dark Rockingham glaze, but not on this bank. The bank was molded in two pieces and joined before firing. There is a small hole in the back of the dog’s head to help vent the heat during firing. Measuring only 3 ¾. The smallest size of the spaniel dog banks. The side of the bank has an old, darkened chip at the base with no other damage. Dog banks are very desirabl. E and are highly collectable.
