This is a minty Antique Gentleman’s silver-plated snuff / tobacco box in the desirable oval pocket size & shape with an escutcheon plate hand engraved in Old English style In the mid-18th through the 20th century, nearly all men used tobacco; and snuff (finely ground tobacco that was snorted) was a favorite and quite in vogue. Small lightweight pocket snuff boxes were very popular and widely used by the middle class as they were affordable. Snuff boxes come in in hundreds of different sizes, shapes, materials, and quality. This piece has the small flat oval shape pocket size that was very popular in snuff / tobacco boxes; and thus, are an eye appealing, desirable pattern. This handmade snuff / tobacco box is about 3 1/8″ wide X 2 1/16″ deep X 3/4 tall and weighs 1.8 ounces or 53 grams. The top has a slightly domed center panel with a wide grooved border with a flat 3-pronged hinge that connects the top to the base. The top has a thin vertical lip along the outside border that seals the top snugly to the base and keeps the contents secure. There is a small lip with an indentation in the front of the lid for opening but note this piece has had little use if any and inside is mint condition. This piece has an 1860 patent stamp that dates it to around the time of the Civil War but was never used. The top, sides and bottom all have the original silver plating intact, with light aged patina. This piece has seen very light wear, with only rub marks of the soft silver plating; and has been “put up” for its approximate 150+ year lifespan. The inside appears in untouched original condition. This is a charming piece of Civil War period memorabilia in as found, minty, original untouched condition overall for its extreme age. This was designed as a pocket snuff box and could also have been used for loose tobacco. This would be perfect for any Civil War, snuff, snuff box, tobacco, or smalls collection / display; or use for keepsakes / a ring box / jewelry box / knickknacks, or as a desk accessory / conversation piece / gift.
