Beautiful Rare Antique c1900 Italian Bowl Back Mandolin By Luigi Poppi of Palermo. This pretty mandolin is unusual in that it was made in the Sicilian capital rather than in Catania, a renowned centre of stringed instrument manufacture on the island. It has a very close-grained spruce top, edges with contrasting lozenges of ebony and mother-of-pearl and delicate purfling. Some of the lozenges are missing, as seen in the photos. The soundhole rosette is decorated with a variety of shapes in mother-of-pearl and more purfling. There is some slight wear to this, which can be seen in the photos. The scratchplate is in the form of a butterfly, and incorporates lots of abalone. The rosewood bowl and clasp are nicely trimmed with tulipwood. The fingerboard has mother-of-pearl fret dots. The headstock has a cut-out as favoured by many Italian makers. The enclosed tuners and stringposts are brass, as is the. The nut, saddle and tuner buttons are bone. It currently only has 2 strings and will need to be restrung. The overall length is 24, the table is 8 at its widest point.
