Here for sale is an extraordinarily rare, truly exceptional, authentic 18ct gold and sterling silver mounted approximately 6.50ct natural Unheated blue sapphire and diamond George III era dress ring. The sapphire most likely originates from Ceylon. The Georgian period was an exciting, vibrant and prosperous period; it was a time of excess, and high society hedonism, where both men and women of wealth and status wore extravagant costume and jewels. This stunning ring would have belonged to someone of wealth and status. Dating to the last quarter of the 18th century, the sapphire is most likely foiled as typical of the period, with the sapphire hand faceted in the antique’old cut’ style, and set in the characteristically Georgian domed, closed back and pinched collet mount, a characteristic of Georgian gem-setting. The cup mounted sapphire is set into a raised gallery of sterling silver openwork, this studded with 6 beautifully sparkly, open backed, rose cut diamonds. The sturdy ring shank is 18ct gold and decorated all round in a stylised embossed floral design, typical of the decorative Georgian aesthetic. This unique jewel represents a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike: it is a wholly handcrafted work of exceptionally precious art, and would have been commissioned by a customer of great wealth. It remains in excellent antique condition, remarkable for its 220-240 years, and is suitable for immediate wear.
