I BOUGHT THIS RING AS A CORNFLOWER BLUE SAPPHIRE, AND SUBSEQUENT TESTING IDENTIFIES IT AS SUCH. Internal Diameter Across (parallel to the ring face) 18mm UK: P/US: 8/EU: 56 1/4. Sapphire Dimensions: 12mmX10.5mm. 6 Rose Cut Diamonds: each approximately 3 points. Ring Face: 16mmX16mm Depth: 7mm. Here for sale is an extraordinarily rare, truly exceptional, authentic 18ct gold and sterling silver mounted approximately 6.50ct natural Unheated blue sapphire and diamond George III era dress ring. The sapphire most likely originates from Ceylon. The Georgian period was an exciting, vibrant and prosperous period; it was a time of excess, and high society hedonism, where both men and women of wealth and status wore extravagant costume and jewels. This stunning ring would have belonged to someone of wealth and status. Dating to the last quarter of the 18th century, the sapphire is most likely foiled as typical of the period, with the sapphire hand faceted in the antique’old cut’ style, and set in the characteristically Georgian domed, closed back and pinched collet mount, a characteristic of Georgian gem-setting. The cup mounted sapphire is set into a raised gallery of sterling silver openwork, this studded with 6 beautifully sparkly, open backed, rose cut diamonds. The sturdy ring shank is 18ct gold and decorated all round in a stylised embossed floral design, typical of the decorative Georgian aesthetic. This unique jewel represents a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike: it is a wholly handcrafted work of exceptionally precious art, and would have been commissioned by a customer of great wealth. It remains in excellent antique condition, remarkable for its 220-240 years, and is suitable for immediate wear. Gorgeous and very rare antique ring from the late 1800’s. I thought this ring was sterling but this beauty is stamped 18k on the silver colored band and a maker’s mark that I could not make out- both very faint/faded. Not quite sure what the metal content is. The ring was most probably made in Italy- it is handmade and features a square cut robin egg blue turquoise stone with an intricate micro mosaic of a bird. There is a crack in the turquoise due to the age of the ring- but the crack does not go through the mosaic at all. The ring is about a size 5 and weighs about 5.8g. It is a wonderful very rare antique estate piece from a very high end Boston MA estate. Photos are a large part of the description.
