The Kilim carpet is a double sided flat weave carpet hand made by the Berber tribespeople in and around the Atlas mountains in Tunisia, North Africa. Each region Gafa, El Jem, Sidibou Said, Tunis, Hammamet, etc. Has different, but similar design features on the carpets, but no two carpets are alike. They are highly individualized. The Kilims are all made from 100% wool usually on a cotton weft. The Kilims are mostly known for their geometric patterns. Animals, children and adults are also represented. They used many sources of dyes to obtain the jewel-tone colors commonly found on these Kilims. After WWll, aniline dyes were introduced to North Africa, so they, along with various indigenous insects and plants were used to obtain the vivid colors used on the carpets. The sizes range from 4’x6′ to 7′ or 8′ x 9, 10 or slightly larger. These carpets have been in the original purchasers possession since 1985.
