Matadi, port city, extreme Democratic Republic of congo. It is located along the Congo River, opposite the city of Vivi. Matadi is located 150 km upstream of the Atlantic port of Banana and is the farthest point of the river reached by ocean going vessels; cataracts prevent further navigation upstream. It is the nation’s main port, with one of central Africa’s largest ports and a 1.5 km coastline that is cut into granite. Located at the base of the Crystal Mountains, the city is named after the word Kikongo for stone.
